Before war he taught school and practice law in Alabama before he moved to Texas in 1831. He also wrote in the newspaper. When he was twenty he had his first son Charles Edward Travis. Travis abandoned his wife, son, and an unborn daughter, and headed for Texas. The reason Travis came to Texas is because he failed his marriage and went to open a law practice. The reason he joined the Alamo was because he arrived when the law of April 6, 1830. He didn't like this law at all and wanted his independence.
